I have been challenged by
all5horizons to divulge how I proposed to my wife Mindy. So, for fun, and because all cliffhangers need to be resolved, I give you The proposal.
Mindy and I had been dating since January of 1999, and had even taken a couple of breaks in between the time we started dating and the time we became engaged. In the beginning of 2001, just for fun, we went to a jeweler and we looked over some rings and even glanced at bands for engagement rings. I went back and put a down payment on the ring with the intent that I would pay for it once I got my bonus for the year. Unfortunately, because I had switched jobs my bonus was not right and in fact it was much less than anticipated, so my boss went to bat for me to get things fixed. A week before payday my boss called me and told me that I would be getting it the bonus on the following payday, so I called up my jewel guy and told him to set my stone in the setting for pick up the following week. On April 20th I got the bonus in my bank account and after work I went to the jeweler to pay off and picked up the ring. I took it to show my Grandmother, who was ecstatic that I was finally going to pop the question because she adored Mindy. That night we went out to dinner, and being that it was a Friday night there was a wait anywhere we went and I had the ring burning a hole in my pocket. We settled on dinner at Outback, and because the wait was over 1 1/2 hours we opted to eat in the bar. After salads, Mindy decided to go to the restroom, and while she was gone I pulled the ring out of my pocket and pondered what would the best way to propose be? I didn;t have much time, since I spotted Mindy coming back, so I stashed the ring out of sight under the table. The noise in the bar area was so loud, and my nerves were shot, so i decided to just dive in and get it out of the way. No romantic setting, no eleaborate plans, just me talking over the crowd in Outback. "Y'know, my grandmother loves you, and so does my nephew. I love you too," out comes the ring box with the diamond sparkling, "Would you do me the honor of making me the happiest man on Earth by being my wife?" I don't think she heard a word I said, but she saw the ring and she gasped. The waitresses in the bar were watching us and they figured out what was happening and they were all excited. Of course, she said yes.
After dinner we called friends and family, and it just so happened our friends Heather and Shawn were headed to the same restaurant, so we hung back so Mindy could show off her ring. They were the first people to see it on her hand, so I think they felt special since they were there from the beginning.
So there you have it... My non-romantic, klutzed my way through it, shoulda coulda woulda marriage proposal.
