Post Oscar Rant & Observations
Mar. 7th, 2006 08:48 pmLong overdue, I know, but here are my quick thoughts about the Oscars... (and feel free to add your two cents if you want to)
Motherhood looks good on them - A quick note to Rachel Weisz and Jennifer Garner: I love the new accessories! Seriously, it was the high point of the show for me. Nothing like luscious breasts to make a man pay attention. This is why I will watch a movie with either of them (or both - how about Brokeback Oscars!), rather than Keira Knightly.
Is there a channel on the TV that Ryan Seacrest ISN'T ON?! My GOD! I turn on E for a red carpet update and there he is. He was on ABC for New Years. He is on Fox for that Idol thing. I WAN'T A SEACREST FREE TV!!!
Keannu and Sandra presenting together, walking out to the theme to Speed. I was rather disappointed he didn't say, 'Whoa,' just once. That would have at least made it somewhat entertaining.
Jon Stewart - Personally, I thought he was just okay. Not as abrasive as Chris Rock, not as annoying as Letterman, more serious than Steve Martin but not as fun as Whoopi or Billy. My suggestion? Robin Williams. You know that would be a wild ride! Either that, or reanimate Sam Kinison and turn him loose. Just think of the Brokeback jokes he would have done... Mwahahahaha! That would have turned the FCC on its head.
I know Jack Nicholson has a rep as a dirty old man, but did they have to sit him next to Keira Knightly? You have to wonder if he was trying to score some digits...
George Clooney had the best speech of the night in my opinion. I am glad he won, but I have a feeling he is gonna keep his statue in the bathroom. He just doesn't strike me as the type who will use that to score with chick. (Shyeah, like he doesn't do well enough without it)
Crash winning for Best Picture was surreal, but I predicted that it would. I felt like there was gonna be some backlash in the Academy after having the film creating such controversy, and everyone expecting it to be a shoe in. I still haven't seen Brokeback and would love to, but I have to wait for it to come out on DVD since I live in a red state. But I have seen Crash, and it was a great film that made you think about our preconceived notions about race. If you haven't seen it, than rent it (or buy it).
What is up with those Microphone Hogs? You are part of a team people, keep it short and sweet and let someone else do some talking. Or, better yet, did you notice the music was playing as soon as they got to the mic? Yeah, nice way to cut people off. I say people should go up there with Cuba Gooding so he can do their speeches for them. "Forget the band! I am talking!!"
Funny thing, right after watching Hillary Swank present to Phillip Seymor Hoffman, I flipped a channel and there she was starring in 'The Core' late at night. Now there is a performance! She so should have won for that one... Good thing I Tivo'd it! Gonna enjoy that one sometime this week (either before or after Idol - you know Mindy is watching it right now as I type).
I think Charlize Theron had a parrot on her shoulder and the dress had a built in tent for it. Nah, not really, but seriously, what was that thing?! Someone shoot that dress designer.
Jennifer Aniston presented, but Brad and Angelina were nowhere to be seen in the audience. Either that means the Academy sided with Jennifer, or else Jennifer got to keep the Academy as her friends. At least, in relationship logic, that is how I see it.
Ben Stiller - One of the funnier moments of the night. Nuff said.
Will Ferrell - Did anyone notice they mis-spelled his name on the marquee? I don't think he knew either.
Personally speaking, I think the academy was tired of Star Wars films and gave special effects and make-up nods to the new SFX trilogy flavor of the year. But I think Star Wars deserved to win in the categories it was honored to be in.
I think Howl's Moving Castle was much better than some dopey claymation film. (It comes out on DVD this week or next - check it out)
I want one of those stuffed penguins the March of the Penguin guys had. I think Emily would LOVE one of them!!
Where were all the political speeches and what not? The closest we had was Jon Stewart talking about tearing down the Oscar statue (which was frikkin' funny).
And that ends my Oscar rants and observations. I hope you enjoyed them. :-)
