My friend [livejournal.com profile] hofmannison wrote this and I was just thinking about it after seeing a pic from the Rudolph special.  Since he has his journal marked as 'friends only' I think it is a shame that not everyone can read it, so I have copied it and pasted it here for you to enjoy.

"So, the holiday classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is on tonite, which means that it's time for the seventh annual reposting of my critique of that timeless classic!
For those new to my journal since last December, this is a criticism that I wrote up seven years ago in response to watching the special after I had completed my multiculturalism course for my master's degree.
Ok, so this whole Rudolph special, the show that I've been watching since I can remember, has some serious homosexual overtones. The cartoon/ puppet/ claymation show was made in 1964, which was one of the peak times in our history for the repression of homosexuals, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is a metaphor for that oppression of gay culture.
Look at the facts. Rudolph, our homosexual, is different from the other reindeer. He has a condition that embarrasses his family-- his father particularly-- and must hide it from the others because he'll get made fun of and won't be able to play with them. Donner, his father, makes him cover his nose--putting it in the proverbial "closet"-- so he can be more accepted by his peers and Donner's boss, Mr. Kringle. Once he is "outed" as being different from the other boys, he is forced to flee Christmas Town as a downtrodden misfit.
While on his way out of town, he meets up with another one of his "kind", Hermie, the toy making elf who wants to become a dentist. Hermie has well-groomed blond hair, a lisp, sings, and dances. The only time he was happy in the toyshop was when he was making the dolls prettier by giving them perfect teeth. He was also kicked out of town for being different from the other elves, and the two set off for parts unknown.
While out in the tundra, they meet up with Yukon Cornelius, the butch, rugged prospector who licks his phallic ice pick to look for silver and gold. He has a poodle on his dog sled team and also sings songs.
The group is being chased through the tundra by the abominable snowman, who is obviously the manifestation of all that is masculine. They run in fear from this beast because they are afraid of what it will do to them and their differences.
The group winds up at the Island of Misfit Toys, which might as well be Fire Island because of all the blatant homosexual activity. First of all, there's Charlie in the Box, who hops around all flamboyantly, lisping all the way. He pops out of the "box," slang for female genitalia, because he obviously doesn't want to be in there. There's a cowboy who rides an ostrich, and in a true showing of their man-love for each other, Rudolph licks jelly off of Hermie's face after it's squirted onto it by a gun. They go to see King Moonracer, which is a male stripper name if I've ever heard it, who's a lion with wings, another contradiction of the masculine and feminine. He allows them to stay for the night in a small, cramped house with only one bed, which all the males must share.
As the show continues, the males return to Christmas Town only to find out that Rudolph's mother and his "fag hag" Clarice have been captured by the snowman--interesting how he went after the women since he's the manifestation of masculinity, huh? Anyway, in order to lure the snowman out of the cave, Hermie has to get on all fours and squeal like a pig. They lure him out and remove all his teeth-- his true symbol of power and control-- and is then forced by the elves and Yukon to decorate trees.
Santa and the elves ultimately accept the misfits, but only because they realize they're needed in order to survive and let Christmas go off without a hitch.
Is this what we want to teach our children? I say watch Charlie Brown Christmas instead. It's cooler and has a good message about peace on Earth and goodwill towards men."
